The Dunedin Gateway Project
Enthusiasm is building over the on again off again idea of the Gateway Project. For several years the east side of Main Street development has been not much more than a neat idea. Now new plans have come to light after developer, Joe Kokolakis & architect David Wallace presented the proposed development to city commissioners.
The Dunedin city commissioners expressed excitement about the project and gave their compliments to the team’s concept for the 4.3 acre project.
The proposed multimillion-dollar concept includes apartments similar to The Artisan Apartment Homes on Douglas Ave. in Downtown Dunedin. Hence the proposed name, Artisan East Apartments. The building will include 158 units, 80 set aside as apartment units and 78 for boutique hotel rooms.
Also included in the project is over 17,000 sq-ft of retail space, restaurants and food halls “anchored” by a not yet publicly named national chain restaurant on the west end of the building. For parking there’s expected to be a 2 story parking garage with over 100 spaces open to the public and private parking for residents and hotel guests.
A primary goal of the project is to revitalize the east side of Dunedin’s Main St. Hopefully increasing the tax base and creating jobs. Meeting space, as well as greenery are also in focus as according to the developer, county officials have been calling for meeting spaces on the north end of Pinellas County.
A rooftop space intended for local musicians and artisans to express their craft and entertain is also proposed.
In order to “keep the peace” with the already heavily taxed traffic situation, Commissioner Jeff Gow has requested city officials keep an eye on the impact on traffic in the area. The developer and engineers are expected to work closely with the city to minimize the traffic impact.
